This IS the device I have been looking for - a CableCard box that I don't have to rent, small and it does Netflix, Amazon etc. It is the perfect device for that TV in the kitchen or guest room where I don't want (or want to pay for) a large, clunky cable box or full DVR.

I have an old POS TV that I want to replace.
For reasons, I am getting broadcast cable from Comcast, and I want to use a Cablecard.
I hate the ugly boxes.
While shopping, I can't find TVs listing if they have cablecard slots.
Here's the problem: CableCard is obsolete, because it's a one-way technology, and modern cable is doing all sorts of two-way stuff.
For a while you could get away with a CableCard if you were willing to sacrifice VOD, but now they're doing switched digital video to save bandwidth, some channels are only sent when someone is actually watching that channel, cable box with cablecard slot a few years ago when every channel had to be on the cable plant at all times.
A CableCard doesn't have the capability to transmit, at all, so it's simply incompatible.
The two-way successor to CableCard was called Tru2Way, and a few Panasonic Bets 10 game were sold that were compatible.
There's some even newer successor to Tru2Way that's been announced, but it's not available yet, and, given the history, I wouldn't hold my breath.
I understand the reasons behind encryption disagree though and the limitations of VOD, one way communication, DTV, etc.
I would love to just be able to use my TV and its features.
I hate having to juggle remotes, boxes and IR blasters.
Encrypt the signal to my house.
Put a decryptor box at the home, so I can just cleanly have my TVs.
But then, no more rental fees from Comcast for their ugly enormous boxes.
Encrypt the signal to my house.
Put a decryptor box at the home, so I can just cleanly have my TVs.
They also want to make sure you cannot digitally record the signal, so the encryption has to go all the way.
With a cable box, they can use HDCP.
It's also impractical because they'd require an expensive RF modulator that outputs many channels.
My 1 bedroom has nothing visible but the TV.
I suppose I could just velco please click for source to the back.
Are you not planning on getting DVR?
I think from what I've read in this thread check this out should be fine with most modern TV's.
Especially if they are labeled as being digital TV ready.
Though I am having trouble understand the issue, my uverse stb is rather small and the bets 10 game controls the TV too, is it different for Comcast?
I am not looking to upgrade my HTPC please click for source the moment.
When time and money are more flexible, I'll go that route.
No, Comcast has moved to digital service which requires a box.
I know a few people who get the basic package and don't use a box.
They are all in major cities though.
I know I do, and I get TV without a box.
I pay the bill every month and TV is added on it for a pitiful sum.
They don't tell you that you can do this, I asked them for it.
They tried to send me a converter box twice after I asked them not to, so I refused delivery.
Yes well if a TV is capable of reading a digital signal, which most HDTVs are, you should be fine, if your going for the digital basic package.
If you want the more premium packages which include dvr service you'd need the box.
The only limitations you may have are not having the on screen guide that's part of the stb software.
When I had just Comcast internet the tv would still get random channels from the wall and Comcast is digital in my area.
My recommendation is to call and decline a stb and see if it works, if it doesn't I guess you're Sol.
Well then it sounds like Comcast is going to be using an encryption method unique to them and there's no easy way to decrypt it besides hardware provided by them.
I would ask about getting the smallest stb you can get and if there's a way to waive the rental fee.
I have 2 of them.
And have gone through the 880s.
But its the principal of the matter.
A simple experience of here TV shouldn't be tougher than invading a small country.
True, but that's why those remotes exist, one button press to turn everything on and set all the inputs Personally I can't stand TV, the commercials make it completely unwatchable, I haven't had TV service in ~4 years I hate the commercials too.
And this is a temporary thing.
But I like an elegant solution.

The FCC wants to terminate your cable set-top box.
Here's what you need to know.
Photos: Free your set-top box The government has a plan to help speed the arrival of digital TV and let you dump your cable box.
It's called CableCard, and it's poised to come out from the wings, if not take center stage, in the cable TV market this year.
Momentum for the technology has been building almost imperceptibly since late 2003, when the cable companies to support it.
Now CableCard is gaining visibility, thanks to new devices promising to give consumers more control over their TVs while keeping everything simple enough for average folks to use.
If you're shopping for a bets 10 game TV or personal video recorder PVR this year, you should know something about CableCard.
At this month'sTiVo, Hewlett-Packard and others unveiled new products incorporating the technology.
Most new digital television models including HDTVs now include CableCard hook-ups.
Bottom line: It will simplify your entertainment system and possibly save you money.
But if CableCard signals the beginning of the end for the basic set-top box, the switch will probably take several years to play out.
So what is Cable box with cablecard slot />And why haven't we heard much about it until now?
The following CNET News.
CableCard is an interface for digital TV that lets you plug your cable line directly into your TV set without the need for a set-top box.
It's about the size of a thick credit bets 10 game, and fits into a special slot built into digital TVs and a growing number of check this out devices, such as a newly announced version of TiVo and What does it do?
CableCard's first function--and arguably its most important--is to prevent people from stealing cable TV.
Like a set-top box, it stores subscriber information and codes for unlocking and viewing scrambled digital-cable signals.
CableCard is meant to replace set-top boxes.
But it does not yet replicate all set-top box functions.
Notably, you can't yet use CableCard for services that require two-way interactivity, such as accessing your cable company's interactive programming guide or purchasing pay-per-view programs.
Also, equipment that was made before the CableCard specification was created won't work with CableCard.
That includes all current TiVo models.
Why should I get one?
The main reasons for now are cost and convenience.
It's cheaper for cable companies to produce and distribute CableCards than set-top boxes, and consumers are expected to pocket at least some of the savings.
It also simplifies your entertainment system, removing one component from your entertainment unit and one remote control from under the cushions of your couch.
CableCard is expected to let you choose from a variety of digital-TV services and devices, rather than those dictated by your cable provider.
Updated specifications are also in the works that will enable interactive features, although it is unclear when they will be available.
How can I get one and how much will it cost?
Can I install it myself?
Ideally, the cable company sends over a card, you plug it in to your TV and voila!
But that day is still a way off.
Since CableCards are still in their infancy, cable companies usually send over a technician to install the card to make sure it works with the TV.
Some cards need to be customized and programmed by the technician.
Can I receive HDTV programming with CableCard?
The whole purpose of CableCard is to make it easier and faster for new digital TV owners to get crystal clear HDTV signals.
With a card, TVs can automatically receive HD signals from their local network affiliates and a select few cable stations.
But to get more toy box online stations in Bets 10 game, subscribers will still need to use an HD set-top for now.
Can I use a CableCard on my current TV?
CableCard works only with newer digital devices outfitted with a CableCard slot.
That includes manyincluding most HDTV sets.
If you're not sure whether your TV supports CableCard, you can do a simple visual check by looking at the back panel.
If it accepts CableCard, you will see a slot in addition to other standard hook-ups.
Does CableCard support Wi-Fi?
Will any CableCard work with any CableCard-ready device?
In practice, not yet.
The Federal Communication Commission has mandated interoperability, bets 10 game reported problems suggest this is still a work in progress.
Who is responsible for ensuring products work together?
Manufacturers and service providers are ultimately responsible for making sure their products work together.
They take their marching orders from the FCC.
Britain's NDS joined the list in 2003, according tothe cable industry's research and development consortium.
Why is the FCC interested in CableCard?
The FCC has been promoting the transition from analog programming to digital programming as it looks to free up the spectrum used by analog television broadcasts.
CableCard is supposed to help speed up the transition by making it easier and cheaper for consumers to access digital programming.
Are cable companies interested in supporting CableCard?
Cable companies like the idea of cutting the costs associated with set-top boxes.
But the lack of features such as pay-per-view has for now kept them from marketing the concept.
As a result, CableCard sales have come in well below expectations to date.
Will CableCard eclipse the set-top box?
CableCard appears to signal joke? pandoras box games online think beginning of the end for the basic set-top box.
But the change will likely take several years to play out.
In the interim, new technologies are coming along that could revive the set-top box, cable box with cablecard slot rather, see it evolve.
More complex boxes are already on the way that combine digital-video recording, video-on-demand and media server capabilities such as HP's media "hub.

A CableCARD is a special-use device.
CableCARD is a special-use device that allows consumers in the United States to view and record television channels onand on equipment such as a not provided by a company.
The card is usually provided by the local cable operator, typically for a nominal monthly fee.
In a broader context, CableCARD refers to a set of technologies created by the industry to allow devices from non-cable companies to access content on the cable networks.
Some technologies not only refer to the physical card, but also to a device "Host" that uses the card.
Some CableCARD technologies can be used with devices that have no physical CableCARD.
The CableCARD was the outcome of a U.
It was believed that this would provide consumers with more choices and lower costs.
Up to 2016, less than 2% of set-top boxes were purchased by consumers in the retail market since This web page was rolled out, indicating that CableCARD failed in its objective.
Telecom lobbyists argued that the CableCARD initiative actually cost Americans billions of dollars in additional fees, increased energy consumption, and stifled innovation.
Multichannel video programming refers to cable or satellite television.
A driving motivation of this passage was to foster the kind of consumer choices that resulted after the Federal government landmark requiring telephone companies to allow consumers to purchase third-party telephones for attachment to the phone company network.
The thought was that consumers would see more from wider choices due to competition between CE manufacturers unaffiliated with cable companies.
The FCC was charged with working with the industry to carry out the directives of the 1996 law.
On June 11, 1998, after securing proposals and link from interested parties, the FCC ordered that cable companies would provide a separable security access device by July 1, 2000 which could be used by third-party devices to access digital cable networks.
The separable security device was referred to in FCC regulations as a "Point of Deployment" POD module.
After many requests for delay from the cable industry, the first CableCARD devices became available from third party manufacturers in August 2004.
As of November 1, 2011, all US cable operators were required to allow self-installation of CableCARDs by consumers.
To address this, the FCC directed that by January 1, 2005, that cable operators must use the same separable access device available to third-parties and they were banned from providing equipment with an integrated security access mechanism.
This rule is usually referred to as the "integration ban", and was unsuccessfully challenged in the courts and petitions to the FCC by the cable please click for source />The deadline was shifted forward twice until it went into effect on July 1, 2007.
The ban on integrated security ended in December 2015.
The physical CableCARD is inserted into a slot in the host typically a set or a set-top box in order to identify and authorize the customer, and to provide proprietary decoding of the signal without the need for a proprietary.
The cable tuner, and decoder are part of the host equipment.
The card performs any conditional access and decryption functions, and provides a MPEG-2 transport stream to the host.
The card also receives messages sent over the out-of-band signaling channel by the cable company's servers and forwards them to the host.
CableCARDs may be used to access both and channels as long as they are not part of a system.
This applies to one-way devices only; two-way devices are capable of receiving and viewing switched video.
The ability for one-way devices to receive and view switched video has changed with the addition of the Tuning Resolver Interface Learn more here />Tuning adaptors and tuning adaptor interfaces have been added to provide communication back to the headend needed for switched video.
CableCARDs are not necessary for viewing unscrambled digital cable channels if the user has a —a feature in some televisions and.
CableCARD support is most common on higher end televisions that include a special slot for the CableCARD and a built-in cable tuner.
The card acts like a unique "key" to unlock the channels and services to which the cable customer has subscribed, and the television's remote-control will also control the cable channels.
Televisions that support CableCARD should be labeled by the manufacturer as "" DCR.
Interactive features such as rely on the CableCARD Host device being an OpenCable Host Device and have nothing to do with the physical card.
This makes the common use of the phrase "CableCARD 2.
This is also known as a "" function.
The S-CARD specification was initially https://new-fit.ru/box/free-boxing-watch-online.html in the Host-POD Interface SCTE 28 and POD Copy Protection System SCTE 41 standards often referred to as CableCARD 1.
Multi-stream cards were specified in a separate document in 2003.
No actual M-Cards were released before the introduction of See more 2.
M-Cards are with current CableCARD devices.
To older CableCARD devices that do not support multiple streams, the card appears to be a single stream card.
CE companies have long wanted M-Cards for their CableCARD 1.
This is important for products such as and CableCARDtelevisions with and CableCARD-equippedwhich need to record one show while a user is watching another.
To enable this without an M-Card, these products would be required to use multiple S-CARDs.
Future devices which support CableCARD 2.
Among other requirements, CableCARD 2.
Because the conditional access system is in software, it can be sent with the video as a form of.
The CableCARD Host Licensing Agreement and the DCAS agreement restrict the technologies that CE companies may use for distributing video from host devices.
CE companies object to this expanding the notion of CableCARD network security issues to also include content protection issues.
They prefer to deal with content owners directly with their standards and regard cable company protocols and formats as a transport only.
CE companies wish to communicate video inside the home network using their own protected protocols and formats.
The OpenCable Application Platform OCAP is a -based platform intended for use either with any security access scheme—whether it is CableCARD 2.
OCAP was tied to CableCARDs because, as it was imagined by CableLabs, the additional processing necessary for managing the communication with the cable company server would be performed, not on the cable company provided equipment the CableCARDbut on the consumer electronics device—known as the CableCARD "Host".
CE companies objected that OCAP is unnecessary for the simple task of managing two-way communications on the cable networks.
The CEA perspective is that Java is not efficient for CE devices, and that cable companies are passing to CE manufacturers the costs of a software platform which they didn't need, and which won't run on their existing hardware architectures.
The consumer electronics industry proposed in November 2006 that the CableCARD 2.
This card would be backward compatible with older cards, and support would be required for them on cable company servers by January 2008.
These modified MCards would not allow two-way communication using current OCURs, which, by definition, are unidirectional.
This so-called "OCAP-less" proposal was rejected by the for a variety of reasons elaborated on in the issues segment of this article.
The technical advantage is that much less is assumed about the computing capability of the host, allowing the manufacturing cost to be significantly reduced.
The disadvantage is cable box with cablecard slot the MCard will be slightly more expensive, but the host will not necessarily be able to support the envisioned ecommerce and banking applications.
CE companies argue that such a card fulfills the 1996 law's requirement that cable companies allow two-way communication on their networks, and that OCAP fulfills technical goals far in excess of those necessary for such two-way communications.
The specification was developed bya research group run by a consortium of cable companies.
Devices that use CableCARDs are known as "Hosts" cable box with cablecard slot must be certified as compliant with the bets 10 game by CableLabs.
The certification process can be lengthy and is performed in batches on a regular cycle every three months.
The first test tool to verify compliance of OpenCable hosts with the CableCARD one-way single stream specifications, HPNX, was released by SCM and in 2003.
Subsequently the HPNX Pro version, supporting two-way and M-card specifications, was released by in 2006.
The "M-UDCP Device Acceptance Test Plan" published by CableLabs defines how to use the HPNX Pro test tool to validate the OpenCable host devices.
The first test tool to verify compliance of the CableCARD devices with the OpenCable specifications, Host Emulator Tool, and produced by Margi Systems, was first utilized by CableLabs to validate the Scientific Atlanta Cisco and Motorola POD devices in 2003 POD was later renamed to CableCard.
Cable companies in the United States are required to provide CableCARDs conforming to this specification, and must correct incompatibilities between their networks and certified CableCARD devices.
The current CableCARD standard was borne out of an adversarial process between two main groups: cable companies represented by the NCTA and consumer electronics companies represented by the CEA.
The portion of the CableCARD specs that could be agreed upon describe how one-way services work, so only the portion known as UDCP Unidirectional Digital Cable Product was required by the FCC.
As it was the only thing required, most of the early devices were one-way capable; however all the actual CableCARDs produced were two-way capable.
Many enhancements to the CableCARD standard including the optional Multi-Stream support became known as CableCARD 2.
In Canada, cable providers Cogeco and Shaw offer CableCARD-enabled DVRs.
Video providers in Europe must conform to the standard which is a more comprehensive open standard governed by independent standards bodies.
CableCARDs can also support non-television functions and can act as a controller with the host providing modulation and demodulation functions and the card providing decoding and functionality; however this feature is rarely used and depends on the cable provider.
The resistance softened somewhat with the July 2007 FCC ban on integrated security in set-top boxes, which required all new set-top boxes to use CableCARDs as their decryption mechanism.
By June 2009, the top 10 "incumbent" U.
The reported in April 2016 that only 621,400 CableCARDs were deployed for use in retail devices by the nine largest incumbent cable bets 10 game, compared to 55 million operator-supplied set-top boxes with CableCARDs.
This indicates that the CableCARD failed to achieve the goal of a competitive retail market for set-top boxes.
Unlike CableCARD, AllVid intended to enable two-way services such as, and.
There are still many in the cable industry who are advocating that physical CableCARDs be dropped entirely.
In this proposal, a custom security chip must be soldered into every compliant host; if a security scheme is compromised, a new security program can be downloaded to the host device.
The FCC has not yet approved it.
Consumer electronic companies advocate their proposal for more unfettered access to cable company networks, with CableLabs' role reduced to addressing only cable company interests of maintaining network stability and security.
